Hey friends, my name is A La’Sonna, also known as A. The Artist. I am 25 years old, a lover of all things sparkly and colorful. Anything that could bring a smile to a child’s face makes my heart melt. As an artist, I enjoy creating things that I would’ve loved to see growing up. Although my artist heart is geared toward children, I have a love for painting and creating things that make a house feel like home.
I started painting when I was 17. Drawing was my constant, and venturing out to using acrylics was frightening. The eraser meant I could fix my mistakes, but paint and a paintbrush meant I would either have to find a way to make it a “happy accident,” as Bob Ross would say, or live with it.
Painting makes sense to me now, whereas back then, it was a boundary I dared not cross. As an artist, I’ve learned to grow into new mediums, giving myself the space and opportunity to mess up, get it wrong, and then navigate how to make it right. Art is not linear. If anything, it’s a tangled necklace intertwined with a few bracelets and a dainty earring. It invites you to take a seat and untangle all the things that seem out of place, jumbled up, and just... blurry.
As I’ve grown, I’ve taught myself how to be inspired without being a copy-and-paste artist. As an avid thrifter, I love the thought of taking something someone else once had and making it my own. In art, I treat it no differently, I scroll Pinterest for hours, watch shows that spark my creativity, and sit with nature until I come up with something that is a beautiful mess of it all.
“Perfect” will never be a word I use for my art, but there will be plenty of times you’ll hear me rave over the outcome of a piece. Still, it’s never perfect. Perfect would mean that the process it took to get to this point was seamless, and fortunately, it was not. I’d be able to point out to you every flaw that kept me up at night, staring at the piece until I allowed my anxiety to tuck it away. Staring into the depths of every canvas, I can point out exactly where I lost control of my brush or where my wrist gave out. I’ll never have a perfect piece, but every finished artwork will be a reflection of the effort I put in or the relief of emotions poured onto a canvas.
